McNeil Point, situated along Cathedral ridge on Mt. Hood’s northwest face, rises to just under 7,000 feet. The five mile hike in provides on and off views of the mountain and is overall an easy trek. Once in the meadows above the timberline it becomes increasingly difficult to stay focused, especially for Jenifur, Isaac and myself, as we were in an unreal feeling setting. The surrounding snow quickly turned to glistening ice as our bright orange sunset faded into Portland’s city glow. Fortunately for us the daylight was soon replaced with the glow of a full moon and with headlamps only partially needed our journey to McNeil Point continued on into the night. We eventually returned to the car and were back home to Portland by around midnight. Ascending to Hood’s summit via this route is now a priority.
