Photo Of The Week: 11.20.09

Acquiring a media pass to the Backyard Bang snowboard competition, hosted by the Art Institute of Portland and Brash Creative (amongst others), made me feel a little special, but it wasn’t really all that necessary. However with the city block packed shoulder to shoulder it was a necessity to find higher ground for adequate photos. This took the form of standing atop chairs and leaning against window awnings until I finally noticed a fire escape high on the parking garage across the street. With the turn of a corner into a dry safe haven the sounds of the street swiftly dissipated and I immediately found solitude. Of course roof access is denied at the top of this garage when attempting it by stairs or elevator, but what about that fire escape? One tug on the window and it’s open, I’m out climbing some slick narrow steps and then I’m on the roof’s open expanse. It didn’t take long for others to follow and soon it was crowded, so I made my way down and out of the spotlight of authorities. Once a part of the masses below I heard the fire marshal being called on those above.
